THE POWER OF US i
Working towards a more equitable, livable Boston.

Message from the Board President and CEO

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff of Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation, we are thrilled to welcome you to this year’s fundraising event, The Power of Us. We are delighted you’re with us this evening to celebrate the Life Initiative team and honor community leader Trayce Booth.

At Dorchester Bay we are inspired by the fortitude of our community and the impact of our collaborative effort. The extraordinary neighborhoods we serve are the heart of all we do and exemplify collective power. There’s nothing we can’t achieve together. Just look at all that we have accomplished this past year:

• We launched Dorchester in Motion for health equity and environmental and transit justice. We distributed over 350 fans during this summer’s record-breaking heatwave, and reached out to neighborhoods about the impacts of climate change on our health.

• We rehabbed the historic Pierce building, a manifestation of Dorchester Bay’s commitment to building a strong, thriving Uphams Corner and home to Dorchester Bay, as well as small businesses who need the space to open, grow, and thrive.

• We completed lease-up on Indigo Block, a LEED Gold certified mixed-use residential

and commercial development with 80 units of affordable rental housing, nine units of affordable homeownership, and 23,000 square feet of light industrial commercial space that will bring jobs to the neighborhood.

• We provided loans, grants, and deep and responsive technical assistance - helping more than 360 businesses start, sustain, recover, or grow.

• We advocated for legislation to fund more affordable housing development, green infrastructure, and climate change mitigation measures.

Thank you to every resident, small business owner, partner, donor, and member of the staff and board. You have all helped to sustain the neighborhoods we serve and we are deeply grateful to have you all as partners in this work.

Dorchester Bay will continue to do our part to invest in small businesses, connect community members to sustainable employment, and create more affordable homes.

Let the spirit and collective power that has kept us connected through these tough years keep us all committed to the work ahead.

Sincerely,

THE POWER OF US 1

Our work

Dorchester Bay has a 44-year history of responsive and community-informed housing and economic development. Since its inception, Dorchester Bay has built and preserved over 1,200 units of affordable housing and over 200,000 square feet of commercial space, served over 3,000 residents and families, and issued more than $10 million in direct and indirect small business and home improvement loans, resulting in thousands of new and preserved jobs. We have created robust workforce development and re-entry programs, small business technical assistance and lending programs, technology classes, and resident leadership training, while also advocating for climate change resiliency measures and housing policies.

& Innovation District and will produce 48 new affordable rental units, including artist housing and associated arts amenity space. Construction will begin in 2024.

Dorchester Bay’s

Current

Affordable Housing Projects Include:

• Columbia Crossing: Dorchester Bay’s Columbia Crossing project with Preservation of Affordable Housing is a mixed-use, transit-oriented rehabilitation of the former Dorchester Savings Bank site on Columbia Road. The project will help position Upham’s Corner as an Arts

• 9 Leyland: In partnership with Hebrew SeniorLife, Dorchester Bay is completing construction on the first affordable senior housing development in Upham’s Corner, promoting healthy aging and a high quality of life for seniors in the community. In the face of a growing senior population, the majority of whom are low-income, all 43 units will be affordable with the majority of units reserved for seniors earning up to 30% and 50% Area Median Income (AMI). The building will be accessible and will achieve Passive House certification, furthering efforts around environmental sustainability in a community disproportionately impacted by climate change. Residents will move in during summer 2023.

Dorchester Bay has a strong vision for the future of our organization. We will continue meeting our communities’ needs and ensuring the vitality of Uphams Corner for the next 44 years and beyond.
